just a bunch of farmy pictures from around the homestead

Edgar:

I canned up a bunch of venison stew with white & purple potatoes and carrots grown in my father-in-laws garden:

Cozy chicks beneath their cozy heat lamp. We went with buff orpingtons and jersey giants this time. I look forward to seeing those enormous jersey giant roosters!

We are now officially done buying eggs from the store. Can I get a Hallelujah!? :)

Handsome rooster man:

It really is amazing how much easier cleaning out Gertie's stall was before we had so many chickens. Before the chickens, it took one simple pitchfork swipe to grab up the neat & tidy cow pie. Now the chickens all go to work pecking at the delicacies, AKA cow pies, and spread them out a good 2 - 3 feet. Then the mess has to be scraped & shoveled.

Autumn colors up our backyard hill. I love fall & the colors that go along with it.

The stinky guinea keets are growing up! They're now living in the coop with the chickens instead of in our garage. I visited a family that had 6 full grown guineas wandering around their yard. OMGoodness they were LOUD! LOL! We have around 23 keets. I laughed out loud upon hearing this other family's guineas. I can't imagine how loud our flock is going to be. I think guinea fowl are just so funny looking. Their heads are so small. Their brains can't be larger than a pea. And they act like it! :D

Establishing the pecking order is no fun for the hens at the bottom! My daughter dubbed this one "Patricia". Patricia's not very pretty.

Speaking of fall colors, here is a photo taken from the same vantage point as the one in my header. Summer's green is being replaced with fall's browns. I will never take each season's change for granted. I love seeing it, feeling it, and living amongst it all. It's all incredible. The handiwork of God for sure.

Another new farm toy, er I mean tool. Snow plow!! Now we will be able to get from the front door to the barn for Gertie's daily milking & barn chores.

I know I just posted this picture yesterday but I'm adding it here again for any new readers that stop by from the Homestead Barn Hop that I'm linking this to. :)  Amazing cream given by our Jersey (there is more cream than milk in these jars):

Barnyard beasties enjoying each other's company. :) There's a chicken on Meatball's back:

I just couldn't snap a clear picture of our awesome new rooster. He wouldn't stop chasing his women around! :) He's huge & gorgeous & crows often. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to hear it. I live on a farm!! Complete with rooster crows in the background!! I love it when all my dreams come true.

Edgar: "MMmmm, there sure are tasty things in the center of this straw pile, munch munch munch."

Gertie sayin' hi:

One of the Bantam babies appears to be growing up into a fine rooster:

Me n' Gertie :) .

Edgar spends a lot of time here, at our front door. He stands there looking in with a sad "oh where are my humans and why don't they ever invite me in??" look on his face. (See the broom on the ground behind him. That's what we have to use constantly to sweep his little presents off our porch.)

These surroundings never cease to fill me with awe, peace & gratitude. I am one happy, dusty farm chick. Even though all my hoodies smell like cow.

Reading your recent farmy life leaves me with a silly grin plastered across my face. I love that you juggle (seemingly successfully) a brood of children, animals, cooking and keeping your marriage healthy. It's inspiring and it continues to give me inspiration that it's doable. My floors may not always be clean, but I can make the most of the things I value. Like raw cheese, crowing roosters and dirty faced and happy kids.

We only had 6 keets in a brooder box and they stunk to high Heaven, I can't imagine the smell 25 of them make. We love our guineas, they are hysterically funny. We also raised Buffs from chicks and they are the best layers. One of them is so fat, she looks like the Buddah!

I too love to hear a rooster crowing, but I'm not so fond of the attacks when my back is turned. We've processed more aggressive roosters! Now we've got a banty roo and he crows as loud as a regular sized, but he is not nearly as mean...at least not yet.

What lovely sites! So nice to hear someone feeling blessed about their home and the duties that come along with it rather than fussing about what all has to be done!
