This is a picture of a miserable boy. This happened on December 20th. We had a cold virus moving through our family. Just a regular, minor one. On this day my just-turned 4 year old woke up feeling ill. I got him comfy on the couch, gave him vitamin C and D3 and juice with some garlic in it. About an hour later he began seizuring. I've been truly terrified down into my bones only a few times in my life. This little son of mine has had 2 febrile seizures now - this one that was the day after his 4th birthday, and another one the day after his 1st birthday (how weird is that coincidence?!). And those were two of my most terrifying moments. I know what febrile seizures are, I know that they are almost never permanently damaging. I know how to treat them and that they are not normally an emergency. But when you are watching your baby convulse, drool and roll his eyes unconsciously in your arms, you have to fight to recall all these things. It's terrifying! I felt like I had post traumatic stress syndrome for the next 4 days.
That's all for the sad and scary news.
Here are more adorable chick pictures! :p
And here's little miss farm girl. She's kind of an adorable chick, right?
More apple canning helpers.
My 13 yr old son and one of his many, many K'Nex creations.
And his Christmas cookies.:)
Our record breaking enormous egg. It weighed exactly twice as much as the other large eggs.
A chicken egg on the left, a guinea egg on the right. The guinea egg is very gray.
The kids helped me take inventory of all my canned foods I had stuffed in the back of every cupboard. There were quite a few stuffed back there!
I snapped this picture out the van window as I was driving recently. The ice covered trees were so pretty in the sunlight.
Our own ice covered trees, with guineas below.
These are the Christmas cards we made this year. Each member of our family put an orange thumbprint on the paper. Then I and the kids added antlers and painted eyes and noses. They were a lot of fun & I was pleased with how they turned out. :) My favorite part is the little miss farm chick's teeny tiny thumbprint on the far right of each card.
Grendel during a rare moment that he actually held still for the camera. Our one year old Leonberger.
Now I must go fetch all my littles' toothbrushes and get bedtime stories underway.

The beginning of your post brought tears to my eyes (course it doesn't help that I have pregnant emotional highs and lows) but I can't imagine seeing your little baby going through something so scarey and you as a mama not being able to do anything about it!! I'm so sorry he had to go through something so horrible the day after his Big boy birthday...I hope by know the vitamin C and garlic has kicked in and the sickness in gone from your family and everyone is healthy again for the start of the new year.
You guys look like your pro's at tie dying too...I just LOVE all the colors...we have an annual tie dye party so our kids are always in bright rainbow colors too!!
P.S. those Newsletters look so beautiful with their handwritten charm...We all know that sometimes life happens so no rush we can enjoy them just as much a week or two from now!!
Thinking of you - what a blessing all that food is! I will be keeping your son in my prayers and such adorable pictures of your sweet girl. Have the crying episodes become less frequent? Emmy's have and we are so enjoying her rapid growth - but I, of course, wish she would slow down.
As soon as we get back up to par in the financial end, I will be subscribing to your newsletter. I can't wait!
Blessings for a joy filled new year,
Tonya
I love your updates..poor little one, so sick after his birthday though..hope he is better. My son has had a few febrile seizures and they terrified me,too.
Hand up on the canning..wow, you been busy!
Love, love the wonderful pictures!
Oh my...I had a little one have a seizure once and I totally lost it!! I did not know what those were and called 911...by the time the ambulance got to us, she was all better...
I love, love your canning stash...Way to go girl!!
We did not get the little acreage...thing after thing kept coming up that was not good...the last straw was a water sample that made the water not unusable..so we keep on looking...
I really pray we find a place before garden planting time...our usual stop we have used for years has been sold...so no where to plant a garden anymore...and all your jars are making me drool...
Have a great week end
lovelovelovelove obviously I just love your little corner of paradice in Idaho!!
Can't wait until we get to the rockies for our piece of land.... soon! And I do hope for a girl! Your sweet little chick makes me swoon for another---- even though I already have this fourth in my belly as I write!
Your pictures are especially clear and bright, I think theu look really good
The canning pictures!!! You know I'm absolutely in love with all of those jars.... but doo tell.... what are they, how much, and will they get you through the rest of the winter?
Do you have year round access or are there no plowed roads from your home?
So much to think about when buying land. I spend hours upon hours on the homesteading forum getting together all the info I need.
Blessings,
Samantha
I have dealt with harmless seizures too. It is terrible! You really do have PTSD, you can get rid of it though. Heal, I mean. I have been studying Native American spirituality and it has helped me heal and blessed my life so much! If you'd like to know how it's worked for me, I'll be so happy to help you. It's been a true miracle in my life to find the Red Path. It speaks to my heart in so many ways: the honoring of Mother Earth, the reverence for all living things, the teachings on how to bring a man and wife together in love, I could go on, and on. But the ways we can be free of trauma are what I'm talking about for you. It isn't anything crazy or weird. So if you feel like it, drop me a line and we can chat a bit... Love and light to you, Kate Talley.
Oh, geez...I didnt tell you how to reach me. I'm Kate Talley on fb. My email is mommaknitterkate@yahoo.com. I'm thinking this whole commented deal is a mess....forgive me. My intentions are soft heated, promise.
Poor little guy! Love all the pictures, and your little girl is so sweet!
Jenn, I'll tell you what I'm a "pro" at - joyfully accepting really cute tie dyed clothes as gifts from other people! lol My mom sent that cute rainbow onesie.
Tonya, I sent you an email. Simply Scaife Family, did your son outgrow the febrile seizures? They say kids rarely have them once they reach 5 yrs old. Oh how I hope I never have to witness one again. So scary! I can things up through out the year and have been doing it for 5 years. So, I didn't actually can all that just this year. :)
Nadine, bummer about not getting the property. But a blessing that you learned of the unusable water beforehand! It would be terrible to purchase your dream property only to learn the water is no good. I do hope you find your land before spring!
Samantha, I'm going to try to answer your questions in an upcoming post. :)
Kate, thank you for the comment & the offer! I appreciate it. Native American spirituality sounds lovely & intriguing, but I think I can only study one religion at a time. I'm trying to grasp Christianity, after a few years of trying to figure out Hinduism but finding it doesn't really work for us. I'm so easily impressed by other religions and lovely belief systems- as soon as I read about another I want to run right out & join! :p I'm too easily influenced.
Brett, thanks. :)
Loved this post. Sorry he had that seizure.
