snow & pie

My 6 yr old went out this morning to search for his snow boots. Barefoot!

Just some pretty scenery from a drive into town. Doesn't that farm all nestled in that grove look cozy? And notice the footprints of some wild animal in the foreground.

These are all wild animal footprints in the snow. Isn't that so cool! I thought it was so neat I actually stopped our van in the middle of the road to take the picture. I barely ever pass other humans on my way to or from town anyway. And when I do they are often in a slow tractor or on horseback. :p

Here is my most un-favorite part of driving home from town. This road is icy, and there's a lovely drop off there on the right! I tend to drive about 15. It takes much longer to get home but I get to enjoy all that gorgeous North Idaho scenery! :)

Here's my little 2 yr old pie baking helper.

We made a couple "let's see what's left in the freezer" pies. The last of the summer's huckleberries & strawberries went in, plus some pear & apple. YUM.

Apparently I also tossed in some sleeping pills.

(He had some red marker there on his forehead)

How cute is that! LOL!

Beautiful! You are living my dream. I am trying to learn to be more self-sufficient, but it is hard here. We are on an island in the middle of the Bering sea, cold, wet, no trees, the biggest animals are foxes, although some of the bald eagles are close in size LOL. We had a small garden last year just to try what would grow here, and are going to try for more this summer. Thanks for sharing this with me. Your family is beautiful.

I love strange sleeping positions!! I have a collection of cute photos of my little ones in random places and positions. :) And those pies look DELISH!

Amanda, wow, I find your life inspiring as well! And your daughter is very, very cute. :)

Kris, I too have many saved photos of my kids in hilarious sleeping positions! Like my now 13 yr old when he fell asleep on the floor directly beneath the toilet when he was a toddler. lol

About Me

I met my husband at a party in San Francisco in 2004. We were big city club and party kids. Vegetarians who had never milked a cow and rarely left city limits. Now we are farmers in North Idaho, one of the least populated areas of the country. I'm no longer a goth clubbing radical feminist party girl. I'm a happily married dusty farm chick living out in the incredibly beautiful countryside and thanking God for it every day. We're working hard at building up our new homestead and business, and growing deep our family's roots. We call our farm Rootsong.

My days are mostly filled with homeschooling, homekeeping, cow milking, cheesemaking, diaper washing, breastfeeding, laughing with my seven fantastic kids and homesteading with my best friend in the whole world, my husband. I have a passion for natural foods and natural birth, and living simply and joyfully.

A brief timeline:

I began this blog way back in early 2006. Husband and I lived on a postage stamp lot in the suburbs until the summer of 2011. We then packed up our family and moved to a 20 acre rental in the middle of nowhere north Idaho. I had never set foot in Idaho until stepping out of that moving truck. Nine months later, in April 2012, we were able to purchase our very own dream come true- a modest home on 10 acres of gorgeous rural land. We worked hard to make our (serious)fixer-upper livable, and moved in late June 2012. We've been working even harder, laughing and loving on this land ever since. I am in awe that I get to live this life.
